Visual Impairment
What is Visual Impairment?

There are many types of visual impairments, ranging from mild difficulties in seeing details to complete vision loss. Visual impairment can be congenital or acquired due to disease, injury, or aging. Depending on the type and degree of vision limitation, individuals with such impairments may use various support methods, such as glasses, prosthetics, assistive devices, or orientation and mobility training.
Examples of Visual Impairment:
- Blindness – total loss of vision. Blind individuals rely on other senses, such as touch, hearing, or smell, to navigate their surroundings.
- Low vision – partial vision loss, which may include reduced visual acuity, narrowed field of vision, or difficulties in distinguishing colors.
- Farsightedness and nearsightedness – refractive errors that may cause difficulties in seeing at various distances.
- Astigmatism – uneven refraction of light by the cornea, leading to blurred vision.
- Cataracts – clouding of the eye’s lens, gradually worsening vision.
- Glaucoma – a disease that damages the optic nerve, often due to increased intraocular pressure, potentially leading to vision loss.
- Retinopathy – damage to the retina, for example, due to diabetes (diabetic retinopathy) or other conditions.
